Taxi drivers and transport providers were given special briefing about events in an incredibly busy winter in Christchurch

Christchurch gearing up for major trade shows and making sure the taxi drivers know what's going on

Taxi drivers and other key transport providers who carry visitors and conference delegates around the city were given a special briefing about two major industry events in Christchurch this winter at a morning tea put on by the Christchurch Convention Centre. The drivers applauded the initiative and said it really helped them give better information to their clients, and to know where to be to ensure plentiful transport for people going to and from events.

Cathy Hemsworth, Director Sales and Marketing for venue manager NCC (New Zealand) Ltd, said the city will be incredibly busy this winter. Guests were given a document with details of all the major events happening in the city, with several conferences of 300 - 700 people back to back in the city as well as the trade shows, a great range of entertainment events and special events. In the three months, May - July, more than 84,000 people will be attending events at the Town Hall, Convention Centre and Westpac Centre.

"The city will host two major industry events with TRENZ and MEETINGS 2004 which will bring global buyers in the visitor, travel, incentives and meetings market to Christchurch. Each event will bring major decision makers of tourist and conference activity to our city and we want to give the transport providers information on these and other upcoming events and explain the major trade shows," Cathy Hemsworth said. "We cannot put a value on the benefit of hosting these events and we want to make sure transport operators are best prepared to help. We know how visitors expect taxi drivers to know everything that's going on - so we are helping them be prepared for any questions about the events!"

The major trade shows are:

TRENZ (Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand) is delivered by the Tourism Industry Association of New Zealand and will be held at the Westpac Centre, 24 - 27 May. It is New Zealand's most significant annual international travel tradeshow.

MEETINGS 2004 is presented by Conventions and Incentives New Zealand and will be held at the Christchurch Convention Centre in July. It brings key global buyers looking for venues and attractions for incentives, meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
