The James Hay Theatre is a popular venue for operatic performances due to the intimacy of the theatre and the acclaimed acoustic qualities of the venue.
Recent productions include Madama Butterfly, Westside Story, the Pearl Fishers and Tosca. The Auditorium is home to the Christchurch Symphony and is an ideal venue for concerts, plays and prizegivings.
John Grant for the UK magazine, Opera Now, wrote of the James Hay Theatre ..." the small (1,000 seats) wood panelled James Hay Theatre had an immediate acoustic that flattered and expanded the sound of the modest
forces involved." in his review of Canterbury Opera's June 2002 production of NORMA.
