9 December 8.00pm
CS - Masterworks, Grand Finale

Christchurch Town Hall - Auditorium

Maestro Marc Taddei draws the 2006 Masterworks Series to a close with two momentous masterpieces. Soprano Patricia Wright joins with the Symphony to perform Strauss’ finest and final work, Four Last Songs, a work he never lived to hear. The epic and awe-inspiring ninth symphony is an exploration of Mahler’s innermost tension, “arising from a profound fear of death and a genuine yearning for the joys of life.” (GC/Fanfaire, 2000)

11 December 7.00pm

Since its inception in 1991, the Dame Malvina Major Foundation has endeavoured to help young New Zealanders in the performing arts by providing awards, training programmes and performance opportunities to enable young people to fulfil their potential.

26 January 2007 7.30 pm
Pam Ayres

James Hay Theatre

Pam Ayres will be embarking on a concert tour, “In Her Own Words”.

Pam’s work is popular with fans of all ages, and her wry observations on the peculiarities of modern life raise a smile from even the most hardened cynic.

Pam featured in a poll to find Britain’s 20 Funniest Women, and one of Pam’s poems, “I Wish I’d Looked After me Teeth”, was also voted into the Top Ten of a BBC poll to find the Nation’s “100 Favourite Comic Poems”, in which Pam was one of the few writers in the Top Ten who is still alive! In the UK Arts Council’s report on poetry, Rhyme and Reason (October 2000), Pam was identified as the fifth best-selling poet during the previous years 1998 and 1999, following Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, and Sylvia Plath.

30 January 2007 8.00 pm
Burt Bacharach with NZSO

Westpac Centre

Six decades into one of song writing's most successful and honoured careers - marked by 48 Top 10 hits, nine number 1 songs, more than 500 compositions and a landmark 49-year run on the charts, Burt Bacharach's music continues to set industry records and creative standards. At This Time, his 2005 album, which won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album, breaks new ground with Bacharach's first-ever lyrical collaborations, supplementing the melodies which reflect the pioneering Bacharach sound. He says it is the "most-passionate album" of his career as it marks the first time Bacharach takes on social and political issues in his music.

12 February 2007 - 8pm
Ross Noble - FIzzy Logic

James Hay Theatre - Town Hall

Noble is now perhaps the most successful ‘cult’ comedian of our time. He still has relatively few TV appearances to his name (by comparison to many of his peers), yet remarkably is able to fill the largest theatres on two continents largely by word of mouth. Indeed Noble’s last tour of the UK (Randomist, Aug 05 – Nov 06), sold out pretty much everywhere, without so much as a poster being printed, testament to his massive popularity as fans return time and again and spread the good word to their friends.

Morriston Orpheus Choir

Christchurch Town Hall - Auditorium

WORLD TOUR DOWN UNDER

The Choir is no stranger to intercontinental tours having first toured in 1973. Following a momentous debut in Australia in 1995, the Choir visited Australia and New Zealand again in 1999, 2000 and 2003. There is no doubt about their popularity “down under” and this is why the Choir welcomes the opportunity to thrill its fans once again.

“It’s a good job the Choir are seasoned travellers”, explained Musical Director Sian Pearce. “This is a very exciting tour with a true intercontinental dimension. It will be hard work but the boys are more than capable of delivering outstanding performance to our audiences. We are going to be practicing very hard in the months leading up to a departure”
